Port Elizabeth - After a disastrously dry January 2021, the start of February has been equally dry in Nelson Mandela Bay, the Port Elizabeth office of the South African Weather Service said.

"If we do not receive around 10 mm before the end of the month, Port Elizabeth Airport would experience the driest combined figure for January and February, on record (1900 to 2021)," said Garth Sampson, SA Weather Service Client Liaison Officer (Eastern Cape).

"It is interesting to note that 4 of these events have occurred since the turn of the century.

"With the short term forecast showing no major rains in the next few days and the seasonal forecast showing no clear signal for above or below normal rainfall,  the future is looking dismal.

"This is especially in light that the NMBMM combined dam levels have dropped to a total of 18.08% (by yesterday) and are dropping at a rate of just under 0.5% per week."

This is a total drop of 3% for the thus far.
