Tora Dojo ends the year on a strong note

Tora Dojo ended the year on a high note with two of its students grading to First Dan.  Despite the impact of the coronavirus this dojo was able to conduct a number of gradings during the course of the year.

Owner, Sensei Graeme Lund, said, “Most of the first quarter ran a long smoothly but when we were forced into lockdown we simply changed to online classes.”

Using a combination of WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube and Zoom, classes continued through the more stringent lockdown levels.

“We all had to adapt, instructors and teachers alike.  Students had to find enough space in their homes to practice and instructors had to develop some new teaching techniques,” adds Graeme.

Half way through the lockdown Tora Dojo collaborated with S&K Karate and combined their online classes.

These classes where conducted two nights a week with three 45 minute sessions each night.  The sessions where adapted for the different levels of seniority.

Graeme says, “What was so amazing about the online classes was the level of enthusiasm and commitment shown by students.  As a result we felt it was feasible to conduct an online grading in June. A first in the annals of Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan South Africa

Once face to face classes were allowed to resume, the Dojo followed the strict protocols set out by government.

“We conducted a number of extra classes to help students who were not able to attend online classes catch up.  By the time the end of year grading arrived, students where in a good physical and mental condition,” says Graeme.

The black belt grading did not have the intensity of normal years as no physical contact was allowed.  However there was plenty of psychological pressure and students who graded for black belt will have to do a more physical assessment at the end of 2021 to obtain their formal certification.
