Horn’s Up in Kenton-on-Sea is a great place for a family holiday

20 Nov 2020 13:55

Horn’s Up is located on the north bank of the Kariega River and is slightly upstream from the town of Kenton-On-Sea.

What make this a great place for a family holiday is that it large stretches of river frontage as well as a jetty for mooring a boat.

What is truly fantastic is the view.  All the houses lie on a hill overlooking the Kariega River and the adjacent game reserves.

The Kariega River is one of the longest navigable rivers in South Africa and a leisurely boat journey will take you through the heart of the Eastern Cape’s game reserve area.

Accommodation at Horn’s Up

There are two self-catering cottages at Horn’s Up that can sleep between six people each.

The accommodation is comfortable and but basic.  By basic I mean that there are no unnecessary decorations or fancy rugs but all the amenities that you need are available.

Walking beach sand while dripping water from your wet costume onto the floor is not going to do any damage.  In short, this is a perfect holiday cottage!

The cottages come with one double bed and number of single beds.  There is one bathroom per cottage. Linen is provided for the beds but not bath and beach towls.

Horn’s Up is famous for its view

Basic the accommodation may be but the view is magnificent and it with this view in mind that the outdoor entertainment areas have been built.

The cottages have wide verandas and with benches and sun loungers and the river is just a short walk away.

The kitchen is fully equipped with bridge, stove, kettle, microwave and cutlery and crockery.

Horn’s Up restaurant and Bush Pub

This is one of South Africa’s great pubs.  Located 5km up river from the mouth, the pub has its own jetty.   A large number of people visit the pub in their boats.

The floor is beach sand, the décor bush and beach and the beers cold.

Unfortunately the pub is only open in peak season but not to be missed.

The venue may be hired out of season for private events.

Directions to Horn’s Up

Horn’s Up is off the beaten track and the dirt road to the property is off the R72.  Drive two kilometers from Kenton-on Sea towards Port Alfred and turn left onto Southwell Road. Travel for another two and a bit kilometers and turn left at the Horn’s Up sign. One and a third kilometers down this road and you turn right at the Horn’s Up gate.  Access is via a code which must be obtained by calling the owner.

Plenty to do

Thanks to its awesome location visitors can boat, fish and swim to their hearts content.

Sibuya and Kariega Private Game Reserves are located astride the river another five kilometers upstream and boaters will have no problem seeing some of the big game on these properties.

On the 28 December each year is 'The Float to Horns Up' - a 5km float from the Kariega slipway to Horns Up venue for an outdoor after party.

Horn’s Up is also known for its very memorable New Years parties.
